John 18: 25-27

Peter’s Second and Third Denials

25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?”

He denied it, saying, “I am not.”

26 One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?” 27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.

Enduring Word Commentary      Read on Blue Letter Bible

  1. I might have a different opinion on Peter. He loves Jesus and he has been listening to Jesus say that He is going somewhere they (the disciples) can not go. I believe it is quite possible that Peter needed to see what was happening to his beloved Jesus. To NOT leave Him to it alone. To do that he would have to be sneaky and pretend he is not with Him. He could be being strategic in being with Jesus through to the end. Perhaps he had an inkling that something this big was about to happen and he wanted Jesus to see him there with Him…as close as he could get. I don’t know. Just something that is going through my mind right now. We don’t get to know these details. I just can’t assume the worst and say he is only full of doubt and weakness. It may have been very courageous to be standing at the fire, taking that chance, not wanting to leave Jesus alone in this hard time.

    1. What an interedting observation! You could be totally tight about his mindset in the beginning but his own reacton after the cock crowed appears thst he failed and he was crushed. I think he really believed he could be bold in his own power and found he could not without the Holy Spirit. Just thinking…😘
ps if i sound like an idiot its cause my computer is on the fritz sgain so i have not been able to resd yet 😉

      1. You do not sound like an idiot. You sound wise.
“I think he really believed he could be bold in his own power and found he could not without the Holy Spirit.” Love your thoughts.

        1. Paula You do sound very wise!!!
I agree, I think poor Peter was crushed!!! I believe that at this point Peter believed he had totally failed!! I just wonder what kind of a message JESUS send Peter when the cock crowed and their eyes met?? My guess it that Peter saw eyes of deep love and compassion and a large dose of mercy when he looked into JESUS’S eyes!!!
I think it was all part of GOD’s plan!! The LORD still had a lot of work for Peter to do!!!🔴❌🔴❌💜💜💜

    2. Sorry, i finished reading and i was remembering this passage from Matthew-
74 Then vhe began to 6curse and 7swear, saying, “I do not know the Man!”
Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, w“Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” So he went out and wept bitterly.

    3. Michele, That is a very good insight!! I agree With that!! I believe that Peter loved his Messiah and was willing to take the risk!! Remember when, I think we were in Mark and read all the painful details of whole Crucifixion of JESUS and the commentary brought out that if Peter had been arrested at that time he would have been killed along with JESUS!!! All the work that the LORD had for Peter to accomplish for HIM would not have happened!! Great insight my Precious Belle!!!! 🌼🌻🌼🌻🌼🌻🌼🌻🌼🌻🌼🌻

  2. I really loved all the back and forth today!! It makes reading GOD’S Word together really exciting , even if the subject matter is not very fun!!! GOD is so Awesome!!! HIS Word Blesses my soul!!!
